"Bravo Dooby-Doo" is the seventh episode of Season 1 of Johnny Bravo, as well as a crossover between the series and Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!.

Synopsis[]

When Johnny's elderly aunt, Jebedissa Bravo, disappears, he enlists the help of Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma to crack the case and capture a Ghostly Gardener.

Plot Summary[]

It all starts when Johnny's car breaks down and the Mystery Machine pulls over to give him a lift. The gang asks where he needs to be, and he tells them about his aunt's haunted mansion. The gang is interested, feeling they just have to investigate. When they arrive, Jebedissa is mysteriously not in the house and they all split up. Velma had fallen in love with Johnny, while Johnny had fallen in love with Daphne. Daphne rejects him and Velma thinks she still has a chance, but then Johnny opens a closet and a Ghostly Gardener covered in white flour with a wheel barrel appears. As they do in every Scooby-Doo episode, they go through a long chase sequence through the house. Finally, they catch the Ghostly Gardener and it is revealed it was actually Aunt Jebedissa in a costume. Her intention was to scare Johnny away because she does not like him and sees him as an embarrassment to the family name. The mystery gang sides with her and they tie Johnny up to a tree, although they later regret this decision when Jebedissa flirts with Shaggy. Meanwhile, Johnny meets Speed Buggy, who offers him a ride.

Trivia[]

  • Speed Buggy makes a cameo at the end. This references Scooby's Laff-A-Lympics, in which he appeared regularly.
  • The plot is very much inspired by The New Scooby-Doo Movies, a series where the gang would team up with various guest stars.
  • This crossover was possible due to both shows being produced by Hanna-Barbera.
  • This episode aired three months before Don Messick's (Scooby-Doo's voice actor) death.
  • The villain is "revealed" briefly as each of the following, before finally revealing herself as Aunt Jebedissa:
  • Creator Van Partible had shown the episode to both William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, who approved of it and thanked him for keeping the characters alive. However, Barbera fell asleep during the chase scene, which Partible assumed was because of how drawn-out it was, or the fact that he had just eaten lunch. When the characters shouted Barbera's name, he woke up startled.[2]
  • The events of this episode were featured on disc 1 of Scooby-Doo And The Toon Tour Of Mysteries; a set of 5 DVD releases featuring the cast of Scooby Doo solving mysteries from several episodes of Cartoon Network shows. They were available by purchasing Kellogg and Keebler products through June 2004.
  • This was the first of several Scooby-Doo/Johnny Bravo crossovers in the late 90's/early 2000's. Other included.
    • A Cartoon Network commercial that teased a popular Johnny Bravo/Velma ship
    • A Scooby-Doo Powerhouse bumper where a ghost spooked the gang, and Daphne revealed the ghost to be Johnny Bravo in disguise (possibly in retaliation for tying him up).
    • Shaggy made an appearance in Johnny Bravo's short-lived spinoff JBVO.
